About Liberia:

Liberia is a country located on the Western edge of Africa that is surrounded by the North Atlantic Ocean, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Cote d'Ivoire. Liberia enjoys a humid tropical climate, and an abundance of natural resources in an area slightly larger than Tennessee in the United States.

The country was founded in 1847 by freed slaves from the United States who wished to establish a republic on the continent of Africa. For many years it was the only independent republic in Africa and was once a beacon of hope for what other African nations could be.

Tragically the country went through great unrest and civil war from 1980 to August of 2003 which cost many people their lives, and had devastating effects on life in Liberia. The rebuilding process has already begun, but it will be years before the economic and social structure of this country is completely repaired.

There are many different organizations partnering with the Fellowship that are seeking to meet these needs and be the hands and feet of Christ in Liberia. These organizations would love to partner with anyone else who is interested in connecting with what God is doing in this part of the world.

Ministry Partners:

The Liberia network is actively engaged in four of the Fellowship's Communities of Missional Practice: Education/Training Ministries, Poverty/Transformation Ministries, Medical Ministries, and Economic Development Ministries.

Balama Project- A primary school developed by Calandra & Jessy Togba-Doya, CBF field personnel, in the Suacoko District of Bong County in Liberia, which provides an elementary education to the four villages (Balama, Barleborquellie, Gayea, and Mengbonta) that make up that district.

His Nets- A Christian humanitarian organization that gives out free mosquito nets in sub-Saharan Africa in an effort to stop the spread of Malaria.

Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary- A seminary located in Paynesville, Liberia that seeks to educate men and women for Christian Ministry in Liberia, Africa, and the rest of the world.

Rick's Institute- A school located in Virginia, Liberia that provides a K-12 grade education to Liberian students.

FYI...CBF Virginia is working in partnership with Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention to support the Lott Carey Mission School in Liberia with a new "mission box" project. You can learn more at www.missionbox.me.

I've just returned from Liberia where a number of opportunities exist for people who are willing to teach/serve at both the Liberian Baptist Theological Seminary and Ricks Institute. These institutions need teachers. You may contact Olu Menjay, principal of the Ricks Institute at www.ricksonline.org. Ricks educates children from kindergarten through high school and needs teachers in every academic area. The seminary would love to have theological educators in such disciplines as biblical studies, church history, etc. You may contact the Liberian Baptist Theological Seminary through Chris Boltin at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship--cboltin@thefellowship.info. These are all generally self-funded or volunteer positions.
